by the water, a beautiful wife, and a 7-series BMW. Unfortunately,
Lucky hails from a poor Soweto family, and his application for a
university grant has just been refused. Dejected at the thought of
spending the rest of his life pumping gas, Lucky teams up with his
best friend, Zakes, to start stealing cars. At first the endeavor
proves remarkably lucrative -- providing Lucky with enough cash to
purchase a refrigerator, a nice suit, a classy wardrobe, and a hi-fi
stereo system -- but before long the two thieves realize that their
profile is becoming dangerously high, and that in order to avoid
arrest they will have to relocate. Five years after moving to
Hillbrow, Lucky and Zakes are the operators of a deadbeat taxi
service. Their criminal lifestyle has gotten them nowhere, and rival
taxi gang members are literally gunning for them night and day.
Lucky shares a cramped apartment with 20 other people, mostly
junkies, prostitutes, and immigrants with nowhere else to go. Though
their existence seems bleak, the group manages to pool their
resources and form the Hillbrow People's Housing Trust. But just as
Lucky enters into the world of real estate, local detective Blackie
Swart makes it his mission to capture the so-called "Hoodlum of
Hillbrow" and Nigerian drug kingpin Tony Ngu lays claim to the city.
With two of the city's most notorious criminals both preparing for
the ultimate showdown, Detective Swart will have to work overtime in

brings her to shore. The woman is a mysterious and secretive type
who doesn't want to tell Syracuse anything about herself or be seen
by anyone; Annie proposes that she's a selkie, a mythic creature of

right person. Syracuse almost believes that Annie is right,

AFTERSCHOOL (2008)

EZRA
MILLER
JEREMY ALLEN WHITE
MICHAEL STUHLBARG
Minutes: 107
Format: WIDESCREEN
Rated: NOT RATED
Genre: DRAMA
Early twentysomething writer/director Antonio Campos makes a
startlingly assured directorial debut with AFTERSCHOOL. Set in an
exclusive Northeastern prep school, the film follows Robert (Ezra
Miller), a confused youngster who spends most of his time watching
videos on the Internet. Some of these are harmless, but some are
much more troubling, including pornography and actual fights that
have been captured on various consumer-grade video cameras. Robert
himself doesn't appear to have violent desires, yet when he gets his
hands on a video camera for a class project and starts becoming
closer to fellow classmate Amy (Addison Timlin), he experiences
feelings he has previously only encountered on a computer screen.
During the filming of a class project, Robert unwittingly captures
the overdose of two of the school's most popular girls--twins, no
less--sending him into an introverted, despondent tailspin. Campos's
film owes an obvious debt to the work of German provocateur Michael
Haneke, and not only in its controversial subject matter. More
directly, it's in Campos's ability to create a palpable sense of
tension with the camera. Credit must be given here to
cinematographer Jody Lee Lipes (WILD COMBINATION: A PORTRAIT OF
ARTHUR RUSSELL), who uses a slowly roaming camera when necessary,
but otherwise maintains a static, off-kilter frame, hinting at the
dangers that lurk just beyond every corner. AFTERSCHOOL speaks
volumes about the influence of the Internet and technology on our
nation's impressionable youth.

CASINO JACK & UNITED
STATES OF MONEY (2010)

JACK
ABRAMOFF
STANLEY TUCCI
PAUL RUDD
Minutes: 118
Format: WIDESCREEN
Rated: R
Genre:
DOCUMENTARY
Lobbyists have long played a powerful role in American politics, but
it wasn't until Jack Abramoff became the center of a 2006 corruption
scandal with ties to leading members of Congress (and even the White
House) that many became aware of just how deep and pernicious their
influence truly was. The son of a wealthy businessman, Abramoff
became a Republican activist in college, involved in programs to
raise funds for GOP candidates and supporting political movements in
Angola and South Africa that he believed promoted a free-market
ideology. In 2001, Abramoff took control of a profitable gaming
empire after the murder of casino owner Gus Boulis, while also
operating a lobbying business that curried political favor among
Republican politicians through money and expensive gifts (one of his
leading allies was GOP party whip Tom DeLay). However, when Abramoff
was discovered to have defrauded a number of Native American groups
hoping to open gambling casinos with promises of political favors
that could be obtained for the right price, his empire came crashing
to the ground, taking a number of important reputations along with
it. Filmmaker Alex Gibney chronicles the rise and fall of Jack
Abramoff and the often bizarre story of how his political and
financial ambitions took root in the documentary CASINO JACK AND THE
UNITED STATES OF MONEY, which includes interviews with a number of
his associates and rare newsreel footage of his early years as a
political gadfly. CASINO JACK AND THE UNITED STATES OF MONEY was an
official selection at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

The incredible true story of Hawaiian princess Ka'iulani (Q'orianka

with connections to the American government has succeeded in

13-year-old heir to the throne Princess Ka'iulani is spirited away
to Victorian England -- where her royalty holds no bearing on her

later, the princess receives word that the queen has been
incarcerated, and the monarch has fallen. In time Princess Ka'iulani
realizes that in order to save her people she must give up her
romance with Clive, and travel to America in order to speak with
President Grover Cleveland. Convinced that she can restore her
kingdom by proving to the Americans that her people are not the
savage barbarians that the press portrays them to be, the princess
makes her way to the United States and wages a valiant fight against
