Minutes: 106
Format: WIDESCREEN
Rated: R
Genre: DRAMA, MUSIC
The true story of one of
Nashville's most innovative instrumentalists comes to the screen in
this biographical drama based on the life of Hank Garland. Garland
(played by Waylon Payne) was a gifted guitarist who rose among the
ranks of aspiring country music stars to become one of Music City's
busiest session players. Garland performed and recorded with the
likes of Patsy Cline (Mandy Barnett), Roy Orbison (Brian Jones) and
Elvis Presley (Jason Alan Smith), and Garland's musical interests
went beyond country and pop; he loved jazz, and inspired by Wes
Montgomery, he intended to bridge the gap between country and jazz,
forming a jazz combo and cutting a celebrated album called JAZZ
WINDS FROM A NEW DIRECTION. But Garland was also a deeply troubled
man; his passion for music could seem obsessive to many who worked
with him, he had a short fuse when it came to people he felt were
taking advantage of his talents, and his womanizing ways led him
into a ill-fated relationship with Evelyn (Ali Larter), who
discovered too late that she had many rivals for his affections,
with music at the top of the list. However, it was neither a sour
relationship nor an unappreciative audience that caused the tragedy
that ended Garland's career before its time. CRAZY was the first
feature film from director Rick Bieber.

engineer forge an unusual partnership that hastens the deterioration
of their relationships while forever altering the course of their
lives in director Paul Schneider's minimalist tale of American
entrepreneurialism. Curtis Prentiss (Billy Crudup) is a terminally
optimistic dreamer who rolled into a small town with little more
than an enthusiastic sales pitch and an unusual set of blueprints.
When Curtis' unique plans for a personal "rocket belt" that he
claims will revolutionize personal travel captivates the imagination
of a gifted but out-of-work engineer (Paul Giamatti), all three men
embark on an ambitious quest to raise the capitol needed to finance
their endeavor and make flight more accessible to the masses. While
the results are indeed promising, the stress of both the task at
hand and some unexpected success soon takes an unhealthy toll on the
venturesome partnership.

DVD-THE QUEEN AND I (2009)
NARRATED BY:
EMPRESS FARAH
NAHID PERSSON SARVESTANI
Minutes: 90
Format: WIDESCREEN
Rated: NOT RATED
Genre: DOCUMENTARY
Accused by the Islamic
regime of having monarchic sympathies as a result of PROSTITUTION
BEHIND THE VEIL, her award winning documentary about the plight of
two Iranian prostitutes, filmmaker Nahid Persson responds by
crafting this cinematic portrait of the last Iranian queen, Farah,
who now lives abroad. In the late 1970s, during the Iranian
Revolution, Persson assisted the effort to dispose of the shah, the
Iranian king. And while Persson's personal political views may stand
in direct contrast to those held by Farah, the filmmaker and the
aristocrat ultimately form an improbable yet undeniably warm
connection during the course of filming THE QUEEN AND I. Over the
course of the two years it took to produce the film, the director
and the now seventy year-old queen engage in conversation covering a
variety of topics. But there's one subject that Persson expressly
avoids for fear of offending her subject: The shah's merciless
regime. By avoiding this white elephant topic, the filmmaker raises
many interesting questions concerning the sacrifices a filmmaker is
willing to make in order to gain access to their subject, and how
far the filmmaker is willing to bend in order to help maintain said
subject's carefully crafted public persona.

adaptation DISGRACE, Julio DePietro makes his feature debut as a
writer-director with THE GOOD GUY, a drama about ambitious young
Wall Streeters fighting each other -- and sometimes their own decent

Porter of TV's FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS), is young, clever, charming, and
attractive. He's got a smart, pretty girlfriend, Beth (Alexis Bledel
of GILMORE GIRLS), an urban conservationist. He's also very good at
his investment broker job, impressing his ruthless, cynical boss,
Cash (erstwhile "Brat Pack" member Andrew McCarthy). When a key
member of Tommy's sales team suddenly leaves for a competitor, Tommy
needs to fill his spot quickly, and takes a chance on the bumbling
Daniel (Bryan Greenberg, BRIDE WARS), a former Marine and computer
geek who seems a bit naïve about high finance and a bit nervous
around women. Tommy takes Daniel under his wing, showing him how to
dress, where to socialize, and how to charm attractive women. Their
relationship is threatened when Daniel begins spending more time
with Beth, joining her book club, and becoming her confidant. Tommy
begins to question his decision to share his wisdom with Daniel,
while Daniel is forced to decide what success really means to him,
and where his loyalties lie. THE GOOD GUY also stars Anna Chlumsky
(IN THE LOOP) and Aaron Yoo (DISTURBIA). The film had its world

Genre: DOCUMENTARY
Michael Ruppert is an
independent journalist who has made a minor career out of telling
people news that most folks do not want to know. Ruppert, a former
police officer, predicted the Wall Street debacle of 2008 several
years before the fact, at a time when most analysts were still
imagining infinite growth for the stock market and major investment
banks. Since then, his vision of the world's future has grown only
darker. As Ruppert sees it, civilization and the global economy has
yet to wean itself off fossil fuels, and when the world's supply of
oil finally runs out, it will lead to a global financial catastrophe
that will leave no one unscathed. But while most of what Ruppert has
to say bears the ring of truth, there's a small audience for his
dire message -- the primary medium for his work is a self-published
newsletter, and his most recent book has done so poorly in the
marketplace that he faces eviction from his home. Is Ruppert right?
And if he is, why doesn't anyone care? Filmmaker Chris Smith
profiles Michael Ruppert and gives him a chance to explain his
apocalyptic vision of the future at length in the documentary
COLLAPSE, which was an official selection at the 2009 Toronto
International Film Festival.

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio team up for a fourth time for
this adaptation of SHUTTER ISLAND, a novel by Dennis LeHane (MYSTIC
RIVER). The film opens in 1954 as World War II veteran and current
federal marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new
partner, Chuck (Mark Ruffalo), ferry to Shutter Island, a
water-bound mental hospital housing the criminally insane. They have
been asked to investigate the disappearance of Rachel Solando (Emily
Mortimer), a patient admitted to the asylum after she murdered her
three children. As Teddy quizzes Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley), the head
of the institution, he begins to suspect that the authorities in
charge might not be giving him the whole truth, and that a terrible
fate may befall all the patients in spooky Ward C -- a unit devoted
to the most heinous of the hospital's inmates. Complicating matters
further, Teddy has a secret of his own -- the arsonist who murdered
his wife is incarcerated on Shutter Island. Driven to confront his
wife's killer, and stranded on the island because of a hurricane,
Teddy must unravel the secrets of the eerie place before succumbing
to his own madness. Max von Sydow, Emily Mortimer, Michelle
Williams, Patricia Clarkson, and Jackie Earle Haley round out the
supporting cast.
